Overview

We have a 100 acre mountain farm with two creeks and miles long views in all directions. The only sounds are Pileated Woodpeckers and lambs calling for their mothers. The sheep love attention and are happy to pretend to pose for photos.

The house is a two story three bedroom timber-frame with solar and wood heat that can sleep ten adults or 16 total with children on single mattresses.

The kitchen has a full complement of all necessary cooking resources, a gas stove and oven, two refrigerators and one freezer, limestone spring water of the highest quality, so there is no need for bottled water.

Pocahontas County, a brilliant gem in these mountains, has many local resources, the Greenbrier River and its biking trail, the Cranberry Wilderness Area, the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi, for hiking, fishing and cross country skiing, Snowshoe Ski Resort, the best skiing in the East south of New England and the Gauley River for white water rafting in the fall, with the best rafting east of the Mississippi. Day trips can be made to the new National Park, The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

We have a flock of some fifty head of Dorsets and Katahdins. They lamb beginning in January which can go on into March. So the early spring is full of young bouncing lambs.

A guest’s eloquent thoughts:

Where do I even begin? This very well could be my favorite BNB experience to date. Dan’s 100 acre sheep farm is truly something out of a storybook and nothing short of magical. From the stunning hillside paddock views to the beautifully crafted timber framed home that sits on the very top of the hill (built by him in the early 80’s), no matter where you look this place is absolutely magnificent. Seeing it in pictures is one thing but to actually experience it in person is a whole other story. The hospitality we received from Dan was also outstanding. He was so attentive, quick to respond to any inquiries we had and accommodating in all aspects (he even clipped some fresh greens from his garden for us shortly after we arrived so we can enjoy during our stay)! Our host was so pleasant to chat with and we enjoyed sitting on his breezy porch overlooking the surrounding green field views getting to know one another.

My husband and I loved learning of how Dan ended up falling in love with WV and made the decision to start of life amidst its beauty many years ago. We had never been to WV before but after visiting it for the first time we could clearly see why he made that move. His love for WV and for the nature that surrounds him is apparent, you get that feeling throughout his warm and inviting home. Dan had farm fresh eggs and a freshly made pan of delicious cornbread offered to us in his fridge which we gladly enjoyed throughout our stay. His book collection was extensive and he had plenty of towels, sheets and basic amenities available for us as well.

One of the very best things about this space is the absolute peace a tranquility that you will find here. We loved falling asleep with the windows open while listening to the crickets at night and waking up in the morning to the sounds of the birds chirping nearby. If what you are looking for is some rest and relaxation then this is the perfect place for you. The cell phone service is conveniently spotty around this area which is a pleasant situation to find yourself in if you would like to disconnect for a bit. I encourage you to leave your electronics upstairs and just enjoy some quality time sitting on the porch with a good book.

We cannot wait to come back to WV to visit again in the future and you better believe that if we do, we are coming straight to Dan’s farm. We felt so fortunate and honored that he shared this place with us and it will be hard to replicate this elsewhere if we tried. -Melissa

P.S. If you are an animal lover like us then this will be the perfect place for you. Between the dozens of grazing sheep and the sweet and loving kitty that lives on premise (his name is Aiden),…
