Taking on a farm as a second career always seems like a good idea from afar, especially if the farm is in North Carolina and you are in New York. Well, maybe that isn’t quite fair. John and Mina Piraino were looking for a slower, more sustainable lifestyle as empty nesters, and the thought of working outside appealed to John, a mechanical engineer by training. Two of their children already lived in Greenville SC, and it felt like everyone in the family was moving south.
Morning Song Farm in Rainbow, California -- just in its name and location, already sounds like a place you might want to visit. Positioned between San Diego and Orange County, in the middle of Temecula/Fallbrook wine country and butting up to the Santa Margarita Reserve, the farm feels miles away from civilization when in fact it is only 40 minutes from the Pacific and an hour from the nearest airport.
“Everything we eat has a story. Know what you eat.”
Lauren Hartmann and Ted Bancroft wear their farm on their sleeves.

(Please note: The owners of Rancho Dos Amantes are selling the ranch and will no longer be hosting farm stays.)
You may not know that the Farm Stay U.S. HQ farm is located in the pacific northwest, in a part of Oregon that is generally pretty mild, weather-wise. We get a lot of rain (the farm stay host here says spring is lambing season, and fall/winter is mud season), but only occasional snow.
