We tried something a little different this time with our profile of Blind Buck Valley Farmstead! (It's our first time attempting a video blog, so please forgive a couple of moments where the sound dropped out a bit.)
Morning Song Farm in Rainbow, California -- just in its name and location, already sounds like a place you might want to visit. Positioned between San Diego and Orange County, in the middle of Temecula/Fallbrook wine country and butting up to the Santa Margarita Reserve, the farm feels miles away from civilization when in fact it is only 40 minutes from the Pacific and an hour from the nearest airport.

** This farm was not able to continue to offer lodging due to country regulations. However, we think they still make goats and we loved their photos so decided to keep the blog about their farm alive **
Don't miss our previous list of farm stays to follow on Instagram!
Recently, Farm Stay U.S. members Ruth Pepler and her daughter Grace from Dogwood Hills were guests on a podcast called The Urban Farm Podcast with Greg Peterson. (Link to listen at the bottom of this post.)
You may not know that the Farm Stay U.S. HQ farm is located in the pacific northwest, in a part of Oregon that is generally pretty mild, weather-wise. We get a lot of rain (the farm stay host here says spring is lambing season, and fall/winter is mud season), but only occasional snow.
It can be difficult to say goodbye to your new "farm family" when vacation is over. You want to hang on to that feeling - the connection and quietude. Farmers are sharing their daily lives with increasing frequency via social media, and one of our favorite ways to see what they're up to is to follow on Instagram. Here, in no particular order, are six farms (with farm stays) to follow on Instagram right now!
Think your accommodations will be dirty if you stay on a farm? Think again! Farm, ranch, and vineyard lodging for overnight guests can be anything from rustic tents and converted barns, to farmhouse rooms or elegant lodges. Pitch in with the farm chores if you like - or not - the level of dirt is up to you!
Thanksgiving... a celebration of coming together and giving thanks for the bounty of the year. It seems natural and right that such a gathering take place on a farm, doesn't it? But not everyone has the opportunity... maybe no family farm to visit while growing up, or simply no proximity. My childhood Thanksgivings were spent with my grandparents. We had no river or woods to traverse; they hosted the festivities at their home in a Los Angeles suburb. Grandma's kitchen had cast iron pans, bacon fat saved in a jar on the stove, and my very own checked apron hanging behind the door, but it was no farm kitchen. She was a good cook, my grandma, making the most of our feast of canned cranberries, boxed cornbread, and a big frozen Butterball turkey. (And don't forget the mini marshmallows on the sweet potatoes.) I LOVED it. It's still my favorite holiday, though we make dramatically different food choices these days. Here at Farm Stay U.S. we're always checking in with our listed members to see what they're offering. The other day I ran a search on Thanksgiving Dinner to see which farms or ranches had checked that off as an activity travelers could enjoy.
